Sanskrit name : Shatapushpa
English name : fennel, Feny old english fenol, finol
Hindi name : Saunf, Pan-Muhiri, Variari, Badi-Sopu, perumjeerakam, Badi-Shep, Saunf, Madhurika, Perumjeeraka, Pedda Jilakara 
Latin name :  Foeniculum vulgare
Family : Umbelliferae

 

Description:

Leaves, stalk, fruit and oil are used in various food preparations . Leaves were used to garnish the salad and food. It is aromatic with cold potency, sweet in taste and sweet post digestive effect. Funnel is unctuous article which is used also in medicine. Fruit has pleasant odour and taste therefore used as cherry article.

 

Ayurvedic properties:

Rasa

:

madhur (sweet), tikta  (bitter), katu (pungent)
Guna : laghu (light), snigdha(moist)
Veerya : ushna (hot)
Vipaka : madhur (sweet)
  Doshakarma :  Tridoshic VPK=

 

Chemical constituent:

The main constituent of fennel is volatile oil which include 70% anethole and 6% fenchone. Other constituents are  flavanoids, organic acids and sterols

 

Useful part: Fruit or seeds, dried and used whole or ground.

 

Medical properties :

Expectorant, refrigerant, digestive, appetizer, carminative, cardiac tonic, haematinic, galactogogue, sudorific, febrifuge, aromatic, aphrodisiac, tonic and corrective of urinary pigments.

 

Medicinal uses:

Indigestion, anorexia, poor memory, poor vision, vomiting, flatulence, pain  in  theabdomen, dysentry, hemorrhoids, cardiac disease, a galactic .

Oil – is mild carminative, vermicidal, useful in infertility and  hookworms etc.
