 Marich,
English name :  Black pepper
Hindi name :  Kali mirch, Gol mirch, Gulki
Latin name :  Piper nigrum
Family :  Piperaceae

 

 

Description:

Pepper is dried mature berry, used as an important ingredient in all food preparations, and in spice mixture. Hot or warm potency indicates its intensity therefore very much irritant to mucous membrane. Due to its pungent taste and acrid nature it is stimulant, but the fresh fruit has sweetish digestion and very warm potency.

 

Ayurvedic properties:

Rasa :  Katu (pungent)
Guna :  Tiksna (sharp) and laghu (light)
Vipaka :  Katu (pungent)
Virya :  Ushna (Hot)
Doshakarma :  Balance vata and kapha, increases pitta

 

Chemical constituent:

It contains volatile oil- which include beta-bisabolene, camphene, beta-caryophyllene, many other terpenes and sesquiterpenes. Alkaloid-which include especially piperine, which is responsible for its acrid taste. Proteins and small amount of minerals.

 

Useful part: Dried whole berries, ground

 

Medicinal properties:

Expectorant, appetizer, aromatic, stimulant, digestive, produce taste producing, sudorific, antihelminthic, Lekhana (scraping of fat), stimulate salivary glands & liver, carminative, menstruant, febrifuge, cleans body channels.

 

Medicinal uses:

Flatulence, indigestion, dysentry, skin disorders, disorders of liver, oligourea, common cold, cough, asthma, toothache, dental caries, night blindness, eye diseases etc.
